Speed Reading and Memory

Rapid reading involves modifying visual and mechanical reading habits. Having a more active mental approach is equally important to rapid reading. The techniques required for these changes are key to our rapid reading course programme. Techniques to develop memory during rapid reading are also included.

Speed Reading and Concentration

Skimming before speed reading provides a mental framework which makes it easier to concentrate on detail. Recognising what should be understood before the process of speed reading helps to focus concentration. Working at speed reading rates engages more of the brain, so that interruptions and distractions are less instrusive. Speed reading also allows time to pause, and the change from receiving to reflecting on the information so far helps to sustain mental effort.

Speed Reading and Flexibility

Most people read very different types of information at the same slow rate; or they have a reading speed and a skimming to reject speed. Our rapid reading course develops a range of reading speed levels. Effective rapid reading encourages changes of reading speed depending on the nature of the reading material. General information allows a higher level of rapid reading compared with technical details. Rapid reading takes account of the differences. Rapid reading therefore leads to greater efficiency without neglecting effectiveness. Rapid reading is also different to skimming, which is often used to quickly reject information of little or no value.
