Skimming before speed reading gives context to detail and aids retention and recall. It also develops greater awareness of relative importance, and this is vital for effective reading at normal rates, as well as for speed reading. Skimming is concerned with general recognition, speed reading with detailed understanding, and should be two or three times faster than speed reading. Both skimming and speed reading are equally important in managing limited reading time effectively.
